How to Train Budtenders to Capture More Emails
How to Cross-Sell Without Overselling
Smart Cross-Selling Explained
Let’s Roll 🛼
You don’t need a bigger marketing budget - you just need better-trained budtenders.
Your front-line team has more face-time with your customers than anyone else, and how you train them can make or break your email list growth and sales strategy.
Today’s newsletter is all about two things:
✅ Signing up more customers to your email list
✅ Increasing average order value (AOV) through smart cross-selling
Let’s get into it 👇

Train Budtenders to Capture More Emails (Without Feeling Pushy):
Most dispensaries leave list growth up to passive methods - QR codes, website popups, etc.
But the best time to ask for an email is face-to-face, during checkout.
✔️ Customers are already engaged
✔️ You can instantly explain the value of signing up
✔️ Budtenders can personalize the ask
Here’s what works best:
🟢 Teach the value - Make sure your team understands why growing the email list matters. Incentives, loyalty perks, deals. Emails = $$$.
🟢 Use a simple pitch - Keep it casual and focused on value.
“Want $5 off your next visit? Just drop your email and we’ll send it to you!”
🟢 Offer immediate value - Give them something they can use today (pre-roll, points, discount).
🟢 Gamify it - Reward budtenders who capture the most emails each week/month.
Pro Tip: Roleplay these convos with your team. Make it second nature. The more confident they are, the more emails you'll collect.

Cross-Sell (Without Overselling):
Cross-selling isn’t about pushing products - it’s about enhancing the customer’s experience.
It’s recommending complimentary items that they might need.
If someone is buying flower, they might also need…
✔️ Rolling papers
✔️ A grinder
✔️ A lighter
✔️ Storage containers
These aren’t hard sells - they’re logical next steps that make the customer’s life easier and boost your AOV in the process.
Think about what someone might need or want when purchasing a product from each product category you carry:
Vape smokers might need a new battery.
Dab smokers might need a new dab tool.
Canna bev drinkers might want a branded koozy for their drinks.
Relevance is always key.

How to Train It:
🔸 Bundle training: Teach your team which products naturally pair well. Create simple product combos and talk through use cases.
🔸 Language training: Teach your budtenders to recommend, not sell.
“Do you need any papers or a lighter with that today?”
“We’re running a sale on vape batteries today - just $10, do you need one?”
🔸 Make it visual: Create cheat-sheets with product pairings and common items bought together (carts & batteries). Put cheat-sheets at each budtender station to make it easy for them to remember different product pairings.
Example:
Flower → Grinder, Papers, Pre-rolls
Edibles → Low-dose mints, CBD tinctures, Sleep gummies
Vape Cart → Battery, Carrying Case, Extra Cart Discount
This is called Smart Cross-Selling.
Smart cross-selling feels natural because it solves a problem or enhances the product the customer already wants.
It’s about being helpful, not salesy.
Final Thoughts…
Your budtenders are your secret marketing weapon.
By encouraging them to collect emails and cross-sell smarter - not harder - you’ll increase your revenue, grow your list, and improve the customer experience at the same time.
All it takes is a little training, a simple script, and the right incentives.
Start this week and watch your numbers climb.
Hasta luego,
Steve
