Customer retention is one of the most common, and costly problems for dispensaries.

There’s so many dispos to choose from nowadays, and they all have

  • Daily deals

  • Discount codes

  • Large product selections

But most dispensaries are relying on this revolving door of new and one-time customers that make a purchase, then move on to the next dispo the next time they need to buy.

Focusing on new customer acquisition only is a mistake…

Instead, you should be focusing on retaining customers by creating follow-up/post-purchase campaigns that give your customers a reason to come back.

Loyal customers are the lifeblood of a cannabis dispensary. You need to create more of them.

And the fourth, and in my opinion, biggest reason you need post-purchase campaigns:

Hardly any dispensaries are using them.

Dispensaries do a lot of things the same - like I mentioned above, they all have deals and different incentives to bring in more customers.

But hardly any are using their email lists to engage and retain customers.

Even though it’s the cheapest, and most cannabis-friendly marketing option you got.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

Start with this simple, yet powerful 4-step post-purchase campaign. You can build out your post-purchase sequence from here:

Email #1: Thank you + New Order Discount:

“Thanks for shopping with us {first_name}! Here’s $10 off your next visit - valid for 7 days.”

Email #2: Product Tips & Recommendations:

“Enjoying your 1/8th of {flower_strain}, {first_name}? Here’s 3 tips for keeping your flower fresh and as sticky as posssible! Plus, see our most popular strains of the week here {link}”

*note: Product relevance is key here. That’s why segmenting your customers based on purchase behavior ASAP is so crucial. Make sure your offering tips and recommendations based on products they actually buy.

Email #3: Cross-Sell Based on Purchase History:

“Customers who bought {product X} loved {product Y}. Here’s why…”

Email #4: Feedback Request & Offer Reminder:

“Take our 1-minute survey and take another $5 off your next purchase! And don’t forget, your $10 coupon expires in {X} days! Don’t let it go to waste!”

Why This Works:

Most dispensaries don’t give their customers a reason to come back.

So they don’t.

This post-purchase sequence gives them several reasons.

  1. For the $10 off (which can obviously be substituted with any incentive you’d like)

  2. To check out the most popular products from their preferred category

  3. To seek out the related products you recommended

  4. Once again, for the original offer

That’s 4 reasons, and 4 points of contact that seriously increase your chance of retaining that customer.

Creating post-purchase campaigns that actually bring in new customers really comes down to customer data.

I can’t stress enough how the right message, to the right person, at the right time is everything in marketing.

The best thing about customer data collection is the more they engage/buy, the more data you collect - making hyper-relevant, personalized content a breeze.

As always, we start with purchase history.

If they’re a first-time customer, segment them into whichever product category they bought from. This gives you a starting point - you can alter their placement once they make more purchases.

Make sure your product tips, recommended content, and offers align with the products they like to buy.

📌 If someone bought flower → Share storage tips and popular strains.
📌 If someone bought edibles → Suggest dosage guides, timing tips, or similar edibles.
📌 If someone buys carts → Share tips for avoiding clogs and recommend high-end carts/dabs.

The more specific you are, the more value your customer feels.

And value is what drives retention.

Most dispensaries lose their customers not because of a bad product - but because of bad follow-up.

Your follow-up is your marketing.
