Your "Dead" Email List isn't Dead (yet)...
How to wake up inactive subs and recover untapped email revenue:
Welcome to High On Marketing - A weekly newsletter where I show you how to strengthen your email marketing strategy for your cannabis brand. Learn how to nurture your audience, increase retention rates, and sell more weed.

⚡Quick Tip⚡
‼️Don’t chase new customers until you’ve tapped the goldmine you already have.‼️
👉 Go into your CRM right now and filter subscribers who haven’t opened or clicked an email in 60+ days.
👉 Then, segment them into groups based on past purchase habits (high spenders, deal chasers, edibles-only, etc.).
Now you're no longer guessing… you’re targeting.
Relevance is the #1 driver of re-engagement.
Personalize your win-back emails and watch your “lost” revenue come back to life.

Today’s Email:
Identifying & Segmenting Your Inactive Subscribers
Creating Personalized Win-Back Campaigns
What To Do Once They Come Back
Final Thoughts
Let’s Roll 🛼
Every dispensary has unengaged subscribers sitting in their email list right now who are just waiting for the right reason to come back.
And most dispensaries do nothing to try to recover those subscribers.
This means there are thousands of dollars that dispos (like yours) are ignoring, and failing to collect.
The biggest opportunity to grow sales isn’t always finding new customers…
It’s re-engaging the ones who already know your brand and stopped showing up.
If you’ve ever wondered why customers ghost you - and how to win them back - keep reading.
Your customers aren’t lost for good, they just need a reason to come back…

My 5-step process for re-engaging (and retaining) inactive subs:
1. Identifying Your Inactives:
You gotta know who you’re targeting before you target them.
Filter your subscribers for anyone who hasn’t made a purchase or engaged with your content in 60+ days.
Break them up into clear segments:
High-spenders - Previously bought a lot but dropped off.
One-time purchasers - Made a single purchase.
Discount chasers - Only shop when there’s a deal.
Product Loyalists - People who repeatedly bought the same product/product type.
This gives you a clear starting point for creating personalized campaigns.
2. Identify Why They Disengaged:
Can’t fix it if you don’t know what’s broken.
Figure out what made them stop shopping and engaging with you.
Was it…
A bad experience?
Out of their favorite products?
Were they actually seeing your emails?
Were they bombarded with promos as a subscriber?
Run a quick survey or look at email engagement data.
Send a one-question poll asking, “What’s the #1 reason you haven’t shopped with us lately?”
That one insight is incredibly beneficial to you.
3. Launch Win-Back Campaigns:
This is your moment.
You don’t need to be pushy.
Because now you actually know who you’re talking to, and how to talk to them.
Here’s how to identify & re-engage the 4 segments mentioned above:
🔥 1. High Spenders
What to look for: Customers with a high average order value (AOV) or lifetime spend who stopped shopping.
Re-engagement tactic: Send them a “We Miss You” + loyalty bonus or early access to an exclusive drop.
🛍️ 2. One-Time Buyers
What to look for: Customers who made a single purchase and never returned.
Re-engagement tactic: Educate and incentivize: “Here’s what you missed,” or “Take 15% off your next visit.”
📉 3. Promo Chasers
What to look for: Customers who only purchase during discounts or sales.
Re-engagement tactic: Offer a limited-time BOGO or loyalty-point multiplier to reignite interest.
📦 4. Product Loyalists
What to look for: Customers who repeatedly bought the same product or product type.
Re-engagement tactic: “Your favorite [product] is back in stock - 10% off this week only!”

4. Follow-Up with Something New:
Create a “pattern interrupt” by sending them content unrelated to your win-back offer.
Show them that’s not the only reason your emailing them.
Some content ideas:
Humor - Funny always works, Send a meme, gif, funny video, etc. Something to let their guard down.
Behind-the-scenes - BTS videos of budtenders showing products, cultivation processes, walk-throughs are another way to build trust back with your lost customers.
What’s new? - Highlight new or upcoming product drops to build excitement.
The key here is to shake up your messaging style and stop sounding like a bot.
5. Reward & Reinforce the Comeback:
Don’t stop the conversation once they come back.
This is your chance to:
Reward them with bonus loyalty points
Thank them with a personalized message
Ask what brought them back (so you can repeat it)
Enroll them into a post-purchase or retention flow so they keep returning
“Reactivation is the spark.
Retention is the flame.🔥”
Final Thoughts:
Keeping customers around is key to growing your business.
Constantly bringing in new customers is less sustainable - the amount you’d need to spend on lead magnets and sign up incentives adds up quickly.
That’s why understanding your audience and creating personalized experiences is so beneficial to your brand.
Your customers want a reason to keep buying from you - so give it to them!
